Dave Tarrant, a project engineer at UK Power Networks Services, has mustered 15 co-workers to help build 150-metres of pathway at Spring Grove Park, a peaceful nature haven off Eastwick Drive.

The volunteers are spending two days (today and yesterday) digging out the path, laying a membrane and 90-tonnes of hardcore. All the staff are taking part through Donate a Day, which enables UK Power Networks’ 6,000 employees to spend two paid days each year volunteering in their local community.

Dave said: "My colleagues are backing me as much as they can so I appreciate that and this will help the local community. We have done some works here before and our partners were very impressed with that so we hope this project will be just as good.

“It’s council-owned land and they asked if we would be prepared to help them put in some new pathways around the area because it gets muddy. The local community enjoy using this area for dog walking and it’s popular with local anglers, so we are pleased to help out.”

The project is being carried out in partnership with Mole Valley District Council and Leatherhead and District Angling Society, with support TP Smart Ltd and Southern Cranes, which are providing equipment and machinery for the work.

Councillor David Draper, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Mole Valley District Council, said: “We were very happy to help when the District Angling Society informed us of the poor condition of a footpath that serves the popular Spring Grove Park in Bookham. We are pleased to be able to fund the necessary materials and welcome being able to count on the support and enthusiasm of volunteers from UK Power Networks Services to carry out the work.

“Establishing an improved footpath by working in partnership for the benefit of anglers and the local community is sure to be very satisfying for everyone involved.”
